  • Registered Midwife (On-Leave)

My family and I moved to Canada from the United Arab Emirates. I grew up in Bowness, Calgary and after high school went to the University of Calgary to complete my first degree in Psychology. During these university years, I got involved in women’s rights, BIPOC, queer, and faith activism. My passion for women’s rights, social justice, combined with healthcare led me to midwifery. I wanted to be of service to people in a holistic way, honouring who they are and where they come from and providing intersectional, client-centred care.

I went on to complete a Bachelor’s of Midwifery degree at the University of British Columbia, graduating in 2021. I returned to Calgary to join Phoenix Midwives where I am blessed to have the opportunity to serve diverse clients and their families. I speak Bengali, Hindi/Urdu and a small amount of Spanish.

Outside of midwifery, I love to cook, garden and host people for dinners.

  • Registered Midwife

It was while studying Psychology and Creative Writing at the University of Alberta that I became interested in pursuing midwifery as a profession. During that time I developed a passion for women’s rights and issues of violence against women. I became interested in becoming a midwife because I learned that midwives were caregivers who promoted power remaining in the hands of pregnant individuals and their families. With power in their hands, people can make the decisions they need to in order to have positive and healthy pregnancies, births and parenting experiences.

I attended the University of British Columbia to complete my midwifery education and, while in the program, engaged in clinical placements in Calgary, Vancouver’s downtown eastside, lower mainland Vancouver and Uganda.

The more I engage in midwifery, the more I appreciate the simplicity, yet profoundness of the work. I enjoy the challenge and blessing that comes with every task: from meeting people and accepting where they are in their lives, to witnessing them transition into new roles and identities, to encouraging them to trust in their own instincts and abilities.

I look forward to working with the clients at Phoenix Midwives and helping to grow midwifery in Calgary.

  • Registered Midwife

My journey through Midwifery has been mixed with real-life experiences as a child, as a mother, a daughter and as a student and subsequently as a midwife. From my childhood, I had a passion for healthcare. Growing up in Zimbabwe, I was surrounded by strong, hardworking women who walked with a purposeful gait and birthed babies with the same fortitude, in a place where there were hospitals and clinics in urban areas, and midwives in rural places. My maternal grandmother was a rural midwife who took women into her own home for birth or travelled to them for not much more than gratitude and at times a bundle of vegetables.

After a career in Corporate Communications and three children, I discovered my own journey towards midwifery and joined the program at Mount Royal University.

Midwifery to me represents passion. Passion for healthcare. Passion for pregnancy. Passion for women and families. I am excited to become part of an amazing community of women dedicated to improving pregnancy and childbirth in Alberta. I am excited about choices for women, knowledge and information regarding their bodies and their babies. I continue to meet more and more midwives as well as other women in careers surrounding midwifery, and the one thing they have in common is the smile on their faces – the joy of serving expectant families and being part of the birth of a child. Midwifery is more than a job and a career.

  • Admin Staff

I was born and raised in Calgary, and I’m proud to call North East Calgary my home. I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology. I had the privilege of joining the Hynes lab at the University of Calgary as a graduate student, conducting laboratory research in bacterial genetics.

During my graduate studies, I became ill with both chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. As I worked to restore my health, I became very passionate about issues of social justice and women’s rights, particularly those involving health and disability. In 2021, I was given the exciting opportunity to join this clinic and translate this passion into direct, client-focused care.

I believe very much in the power of transformative change through creating supportive, caring communities. It’s an honour to serve and support our pregnant clients and their families throughout their pregnancy journey. When not at work, I can be found baking, knitting my own clothes, and searching for the perfect cup of coffee.

“Phoenix Midwives allowed us to have the best prenatal and postpartum care our family could've ever asked for. From the warm welcome by the receptionist, Paige, the first time I called to all of the smiling faces of the whole team each visit, I felt very cared for and incredibly blessed to have Babil as my midwife.

I felt so supported and informed throughout my pregnancy which helped me take as much agency during labour and delivery as I could have. My family, who saw my experience said that they wished they could’ve had a midwife as well and are hoping to have one in the future. I would recommend Phoenix Midwives to others, I absolutely loved my experience.”
